This course is aimed at those who work with children in a variety of settings including schools, youth programmes, family support centres, community groups etc. The course aims to enhance awareness and encourage good practice..

Course Description

Everyone shares responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, irrespective of individual roles. This course is for those who have already completed a Level 1 course and need to gain an advanced knowledge of Child Protection, including working towards becoming a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), manager or policy writer.

This course is designed for individuals who work with children in either a paid or voluntary capacity. It relates to the issues surrounding safeguarding children by exploring the concepts of "child vulnerability", "child protection" and "significant harm"; coupled with the individual and organisational responsibilities of protecting children from abuse.
Building on these concepts child abuse is explored and the four main forms of abuse, namely: physical abuse; emotional abuse; sexual abuse and neglect are explored. In addition the problem of bullying is investigated. The course will enable students to recognise the signs of child abuse by focusing on examples as well as the behavioural and physical indicators.

The legislation that underpins child protection is briefly explored.
A practical approach is taken to identify responsibilities in handling the disclosure, recording and reporting of abuse by children. Many practical examples are provided to help adults caring for children to handle and manage the difficult situation of disclosure with encouragement to develop personal checklists for these situations.
By the end of the day, through exploring real-life scenarios, individuals will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills to recognise the signs and symptoms of child vulnerability and abuse.

  • The handouts were excellent and very clearly laid out. There were several activities to do and usually on other courses this involves a large sheet of paper and a marker pen and being asked to come up with words - something you can quickly get bored with. These activites on this course were interesting and you could definitely see a point to them. Also he spent the right amount of time on each slide of the power point and did not drag each one out. I can honestly say I was not bored at any time and the time passed quickly.
